Modern English Father.

Now that we have track upon the English languague it wold be neccesary speak about one of the greatest in this language, I'm talking about William Shakespare who is considered not only the best writtern in the English history but also the father of modern Eglish.

As we all know Shakespare wrote many trasendental plays that we still admiring nowadays because of the way he used to write. The use uf unimaginable metaphors for his ephoc was the trigger that sent him straig to the history. The complexity of his sotries and the language he used to write them was extraordinary.

The flexibity of his language could have been the predecessor for the contractions that we use nowaday and obvyously he made up many phrases that we still use in modern times. Such influence to modern language could be considered for sure as the beggining of what we know nowadays as English.

Dictionaries.

Have you ever used a dictionary? For sure I can say that at least once a dictionary help you to go out of prolems.

But waht's a dictionary?

According to the American Heritage Dictionary, a dictionary is:

1. A reference book containing an explanatory alphabetical list of words, either comprehensive or limited to a particular category, with information given for each word including meaning, pronunciation, etymology, and often usage guidance.

2. A book listing words of a language with translations into another languages.

3. A book listing words or other linguistic items, with specialized information about them: a medical dictionary for example.

4. Computers Sci. A list stored in a machine-readable from for reference by an automatic system.

As we could see we can use dictionaries for many purposes, from understand the meaning of a simple word to a complex and specialized meaning like a concept from medicine, law, psycology etc.

Then a dictionary help us to standarize a language and its use by giving us a specific meaning for each word taht we would use in the future or that we already use but in a wrong way. without dictionaries we would be back to the chaos that ancient people faced once, giving totally different meanings to a single words, writting as they wanted and undestanting as much as the could...

The miller's tale

"The Miller's Tale", by Chauser.

"The Miller's Tale" is an interesting story which talks about how the ignorance or the blind fidelity that we give to our religious believes would take us to serious troubles. Is a passionate, sadistic and satiric tale that shows what men could do for a beautiful woman, and what women could do to satisfy their need of love and that many people I know would enjoy.
The original story was written in old English which is the topic we are working with at the moment, so I will point out some aspects that would help us to understand the differences between the old written way and the modern one.
The first thing I noticed has to be with morphologic. Some of the words that I found in the texts were changed for different ones nowadays, like kerkneth which now is listen or wyte that means blame nowadays.
Something else I notice in the text is the plurals, there are always plural words. Nowadays we know that some words can be both plural and singular and than some others need a letter to change their meaning, but in the text every word that has a plural meaning is accompanied with an “s” ending.
Now there comes the communicative competence part which makes the reading a little hard. There are some dialogues that I hardly understood because they talk about bible stuff without explain them but everyone in the story know what does it means because is something common in their context.
Finally I could notice the Roman “superstrato” which is reflected in some words that sound like Latin, for example nowadays we say “protest” and in the text we would find the words “protestacioun” which is the result of the Roman invasion to England before the fifth century.
Well here I finish this summary of “The Miller’s Tale” and don’t let the opportunity to read it pass.
