The miller's tale

"The Miller's Tale", by Chauser.

"The Miller's Tale" is an interesting story which talks about how the ignorance or the blind fidelity that we give to our religious believes would take us to serious troubles. Is a passionate, sadistic and satiric tale that shows what men could do for a beautiful woman, and what women could do to satisfy their need of love and that many people I know would enjoy.
The original story was written in old English which is the topic we are working with at the moment, so I will point out some aspects that would help us to understand the differences between the old written way and the modern one.
The first thing I noticed has to be with morphologic. Some of the words that I found in the texts were changed for different ones nowadays, like kerkneth which now is listen or wyte that means blame nowadays.
Something else I notice in the text is the plurals, there are always plural words. Nowadays we know that some words can be both plural and singular and than some others need a letter to change their meaning, but in the text every word that has a plural meaning is accompanied with an “s” ending.
Now there comes the communicative competence part which makes the reading a little hard. There are some dialogues that I hardly understood because they talk about bible stuff without explain them but everyone in the story know what does it means because is something common in their context.
Finally I could notice the Roman “superstrato” which is reflected in some words that sound like Latin, for example nowadays we say “protest” and in the text we would find the words “protestacioun” which is the result of the Roman invasion to England before the fifth century.
